Mar06 Linen Embroidered Napkins 2013
By request, I am getting another tutorial out there to you this week. {Thank you for being patient, Susanna!} She suggested these would make great wedding gifts. And with wedding season about to onslaught, I think she’s spot on. You could package them up oh so pretty and maybe include a set of silverware or dessert plates.
This is a great beginner project for those of you new at sewing.
I’ve tried to include some key sewing success tips that I’ve learned from my sewing goddess friend Jenny. Ironing and measuring with a small-metal-measuring-ruler {pictured below} go a long way in getting a finished project you’ll love that looks professional.
I suggest using a fabric that costs less than $6 a yard. I used a linen knockoff fabric on sale and I loved the look {and you can’t really tell a whole lot of difference.}
I also have an embroidery machine, so I monogrammed mine after I cut my fabric and before I sewed them.
You’ll need:
:: Fabric – {mine was linen knockoff and 24 in. x 24 in. per napkin}
:: Scissors
:: Coordinating thread
:: Sewing machine {not pictured}
:: Measuring tape
:: Measuring ruler {optional, but highly recommended}
:: Pins {optional}
………………………….
Step One: Cut out a perfect square of your fabric. In order for your napkin to fold right when finished, this step is important. Mine was 24 in x 24 in, but you can make yours as small or as large as you wish. {Standard napkin size is 20 in x 20 in finished.}
Step Two: Iron down all sides 1/2 inch.
Step Three: Bring down the corners about 1.5 inches at a right angle and press flat with iron…
Step Four: Fold down each side of the corners and press flat with iron…
Step Five: Sew a seam around the perimeter of the napkin about 3/4 in. in from the edge. {There are lines on your machine you can follow to help you have a straight seam all the way around.}
I like to use the triple stitch because it gives texture and substance…
The 04 one.
It looks like this on the top…
And this on the bottom…
Whatever stitch you choose will look beautiful!
This is about how big the napkin is when finished and folded roughly in half on my lap…
These “J” ones I made were a little smaller…
Let me know if you try these!

Yea! This is just what I was hoping for. Thanks for the detailed instruction! Gotta go get me one of those rulers . . .
I’m glad it’ll be of help to you! :-)
These are beautiful! Just popped over from A Bowl Full of Lemons linky party and so glad I did – your blog is simply wonderful. I wish I had the sewing skills (and machine) to give these a try.

Thanks for visiting, Alison! I hope you get a chance to make some…we use ours all the time!
Great tutorial! I love your suggestion for the knockoff linen. Looks just as lovely as if it were linen. I also like the triple stitch. I have never seen that before. I really need to read my manual. I think my machine can do way more than I think.
This is very helpful for those who love linen-made materials.
Thank you so much for sharing! Have a good day!
Was inspired by your post and came up with the cutest little tea napkins. Thanks
